Friday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

March 16, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 0.2% at 2,751.38. The DJIA closed up 0.3% at 24,937.55. Separately, the Nasdaq was relatively flat at 7,481.99.

Friday was a fairly positive day for the broad U.S. markets. The Dow continued its recovery from the big drop on Wednesday. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq also moved higher on the day if only slightly. The S&P 500 sectors were almost entirely positive. The most positive sectors were utilities, energy, and industrials up 0.9%, 0.9%, and 0.5%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were consumer discretionary and technology both down 0.1%.

Crude oil was up 1.8% at $62.29.

Gold was down 0.4% at $1,312.80.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Friday was Tiffany & Co. (NYSE: TIF) which traded down 5% at $97.51. The stock’s 52-week range is $84.15 to $111.44. Volume was 7.8 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.3 million.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Friday was Ulta Beauty, Inc. (NASDAQ: ULTA) which rose over 7% to $221.88. The stock’s 52-week range is $187.96 to $314.86. Volume was 5.7 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.2 million.
