Tuesday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

March 20 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 0.2% at 2,717.03. The DJIA closed up 0.5% at 24,729.61. Separately, the Nasdaq was up 0.3% at 7,364.30.

Tuesday was a positive day for the broad U.S. markets. Although each of the major indices made some progress during the session, it still did not make up for the massive drop on Monday. The S&P 500 sectors were split down the middle. The most positive sectors were energy and consumer discretionary up 0.9%, and 0.6%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were utilities and consumer staples down 0.5%, and 0.3%, respectively.

Crude oil was up 2.2% at $63.42.

Gold was down 0.6% at $1,310.20.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Tuesday was Oracle Corp. (NYSE: ORCL) which traded down over 9% at $47.08. The stock’s 52-week range is $43.60 to $53.48. Volume was 66 million compared to the daily average volume of 15.3 million.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Tuesday was Dover Corp. (NYSE: DOV) which rose about 4% to $103.82. The stock’s 52-week range is $76.23 to $109.06. Volume was 4.7 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.1 million.
