Tuesday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

April 3, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 1.3% at 2,614.45. The DJIA closed up 1.6% at 24,031.47. Separately, the Nasdaq was up 1.0% at 6,941.28.

Tuesday was a positive day for the broad U.S. markets, a slight recovery from Monday’s dramatic session. Everything seemed to perk up a little, even oil made a small gain as well. And even though the indices were positive for most of the day, the biggest gain came towards the end of the session. The S&P 500 sectors were entirely positive. The most positive sectors were energy, consumer staples, and health care up 1.9%, 1.3%, and 1.3%, respectively. The “worst” performing sector was real estate up only 0.1%.

Crude oil was up 0.8% at $63.54.

Gold was down 0.9% at $1,334.90.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Tuesday was Viacom, Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAB) which traded down over 3% at $29.42. The stock’s 52-week range is $22.13 to $46.70. Volume was about 6.6 million compared to the daily average volume of 4.4 million.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Tuesday was Foot Locker, Inc. (NYSE: FL) which rose over 4% to $45.87. The stock’s 52-week range is $28.42 to $77.86. Volume was 3.3 million compared to the daily average volume of 3.8 million.
