Tuesday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

April 10, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 1.7% at 2,656.84. The DJIA closed up 1.8% at 24,406.82. Separately, the Nasdaq was up 2.1% at 7,094.30.

Tuesday was another positive day for the broad U.S. markets. Despite a grueling congressional hearing for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, tech stocks helped to push the markets higher. At the same time, crude oil made an incredible gain propping up the energy sector. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly positive. The most positive sectors were energy, technology, and materials up 3.4%, 2.5%, and 2.1%, respectively. The worst performing sector was utilities which was down 0.7%.

Crude oil was up 3.7% at $65.79.

Gold was up 0.3% at $1,344.00.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Tuesday was American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ: AAL) which traded down about 4.5% at $47.57. The stock’s 52-week range is $42.01 to $59.08. Volume was nearly 13 million compared to the daily average volume of nearly 5 million.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Tuesday was Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc. (NYSE: DO) which rose about 7% to $17.04. The stock’s 52-week range is $10.06 to $20.41. Volume was 1.7 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.8 million.
