Tuesday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

May 1, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 0.3% at 2,654.46. The DJIA closed down 0.3% at 24,095.12. Separately, the Nasdaq was up 0.9% at 7,130.70.

Tuesday was a mixed day for the broad U.S. markets, although each of the major indices started out the day negative only the Nasdaq and S&P 500 closed up. While most of the market was lower in the session technology stocks saw a big boost. Crude oil pulled back in the session and is about $2.50 away from $70. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly negative. The most positive sectors were technology and real estate up 1.3% and 0.7%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were consumer staples and energy down 0.8% and 0.7%, respectively.

Crude oil was down 1.6% at $67.47.

Gold was down 1.0% at $1,306.50.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Tuesday was Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ: STX) which traded down over 6% at $54.17. The stock’s 52-week range is $30.60 to $62.70. Volume was 15.6 million compared to the daily average volume of 4.1 million.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Tuesday was Qorvo, Inc. (NASDAQ: QRVO) which rose about 6% to $71.66. The stock’s 52-week range is $62.68 to $86.84. Volume was 2.3 million compared to the daily average volume of 2.1 million.
