May 8, 2018: The S&P 500 closed flat at 2,671.94. The DJIA closed flat at 24,360.31. Separately, the Nasdaq was flat at 7,266.90.
Tuesday was a rough day for the broad U.S. markets, although everything closed relatively flat. Crude oil again touched above $70 but ultimately fell off by the close. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly negative. The most positive sectors were energy and financials up 0.8% and 0.7%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were utilities, health care, and real estate down 2.5%, 0.8%, and 0.7% respectively.
Crude oil was down 1.5% at $69.64.
Gold was flat at $1,316.20.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Tuesday was Frontier Communications Corp. (NASDAQ: FTR) which traded down about 7% at $9.78. The stock’s 52-week range is $6.08 to $23.10. Volume was 5.8 million compared to the daily average volume of 3.5 million.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Tuesday was Fossil Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: FOSL) which rose about 13% to $16.44. The stock’s 52-week range is $5.50 to $18.44. Volume was 7.3 million compared to the daily average volume of 3.0 million.
