May 11, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 0.2% at 2,727.69. The DJIA closed up 0.4% at 24,830.04. Separately, the Nasdaq was flat at 7,402.88.
Friday was a relatively positive day for the broad U.S. markets. Although crude oil backed off, it is still holding just above the $70 price level. The S&P 500 sectors were split down the middle. The most positive sectors were health care and industrials up 1.5% and 0.2%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were real estate and technology down 0.6% and 0.2%, respectively.
Crude oil was down 1.1% at $70.57.
Gold was flat at $1,320.00.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Friday was Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) which traded down about 32% at $19.67. The stock’s 52-week range is $18.85 to $34.20. Volume was 111 million compared to the daily average volume of 5.2 million.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Friday was Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: REGN) which rose about 7.5% to $310.61. The stock’s 52-week range is $281.89 to $543.55. Volume was 2.8 million compared to the daily average volume of nearly 1 million.
