May 17, 2018: The S&P 500 closed flat at 2,720.10. The DJIA closed down 0.2% at 24,714.05. Separately, the Nasdaq was down 0.2% at 7,382.47.
Thursday was a down day for the broad U.S. markets. Crude oil continued its progress although the dip was only marginal. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly split down the middle. The most positive sectors were energy and industrials, up 1.5% and 0.4%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were utilities and real estate down 0.8%, and 0.5%, respectively.
Crude oil was up 0.2% at $71.60.
Gold was up 0.2% at $1,289.60.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Thursday was CBS Corp. (NYSE: CBS) which traded down about 4% at $51.56. The stock’s 52-week range is $47.54 to $53.90. Volume was nearly 12 million compared to the daily average volume of 3.8 million.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Thursday was Marathon Petroleum Corp. (NYSE: MPC) which rose about 5% to $80.85. The stock’s 52-week range is $49.30 to $83.27. Volume was about 9 million compared to the daily average volume of 5 million.
