May 24, 2018: The S&P 500 closed down 0.2% at 2,727.76. The DJIA closed down 0.3% at 24,811.14. Separately, the Nasdaq was flat at 7,424.43.
Thursday started out as a down day for the broad U.S. markets, but as the day went on everything dipped more then recovered to end the day only marginally negative. Crude oil saw its biggest drop this week in Thursday’s session. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly negative. The most positive sectors were utilities and industrials up 0.8% and 0.5%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were energy and financials down 1.7% and 0.8%, respectively.
Crude oil was last seen trading down 1.6% at $70.70.
Gold was last seen trading up 1.2% at $1,305.10.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Thursday was Whirlpool Corp. (NYSE: WHR) which traded down about 8% at $151.18. The stock’s 52-week range is $145.59 to $202.99. Volume was roughly 6 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.2 million.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Thursday was Fossil Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: FOSL) which rose about 5% to $20.56. The stock’s 52-week range is $5.50 to $20.65. Volume was 1.5 million compared to the daily average volume of 2.1 million.
