Thursday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

July 5, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 0.9% at 2,736.76. The DJIA closed up 0.8% at 24,358.03. Separately, the Nasdaq was up 1.1% at 7,586.43.

Thursday was a positive day for the broad U.S. markets, although volume and activity were not so great considering this is the day after a federal holiday. Crude oil backed off on the day. The S&P 500 sectors were almost entirely positive. The most positive sectors were technology, consumer staples, and real estate, each up 1.4%. The worst performing sector was energy down 0.1%.

Crude oil was last seen trading down 1.5% at $73.02.

Gold was last seen trading up 0.3% at $1,257.80.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage loss in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was CF Industries Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: CF) which fell about 3% to $43.04. The stock’s 52-week range is $27.27 to $46.20. Volume was about 2.6 million compared to the daily average volume of 2.6 million.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was Qorvo, Inc. (NASDAQ: QRVO) which traded up over 5% at $81.71. The stock’s 52-week range is $63.59 to $86.84. Volume was about 2 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.4 million.
