Wednesday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

July 11, 2018: The S&P 500 closed down 0.7% at 2,774.14. The DJIA closed down 0.9% at 24,702.69. Separately, the Nasdaq was down 0.6% at 7,716.61.

Wednesday was a down day for the broad U.S. markets, with all the major averages giving back some of their gains from earlier in the week. Crude oil was massively down backing off its recent highs. The S&P 500 sectors were almost entirely negative, with one exception. The most positive sector was utilities up 0.8%. The worst performing sectors were energy, materials, and industrials down 2.0%, 1.5% and 1.4%, respectively.

Crude oil was last seen trading down 4.9% at $70.48.

Gold was last seen trading down 1.0% at $1,242.70.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage loss in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ: AAL) which fell about 8% to $36.00. The stock’s 52-week range is $35.90 to $59.08. Volume was 24 million compared to the daily average volume of 6.2 million.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was Fastenal Co. (NASDAQ: FAST) which traded up about 10% at $54.63. The stock’s 52-week range is $39.79 to $58.74. Volume was over 25 million compared to the daily average volume of 2.8 million.
