July 24, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 0.5% at 2,820.24. The DJIA closed up 0.8% at 25,240.38. Separately, the Nasdaq was flat at 7,840.77.
Tuesday was a relatively positive day for the broad U.S. markets. Both the S&P 500 and the Dow were fairly positive while the Nasdaq lagged. Crude oil made a decent gain in the session. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly positive. The most positive sectors were materials and energy up 1.3% and 1.2%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were real estate and consumer discretionary each down 0.3%.
Crude oil was last seen trading up 0.8% at $68.44.
Gold was last seen trading flat at $1,224.70.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage loss in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was Whirlpool Corp. (NYSE: WHR) which fell over 14% to $128.80. The stock’s 52-week range is $128.50 to $192.47. Volume was over 12 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.5 million.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was Avery Dennison Corp. (NYSE: AVY) which traded up 11% at $114.37. The stock’s 52-week range is $88.46 to $123.67. Volume was about 1.7 million compared to the daily average volume of 0.7 a million.
