
July 27, 2018: The S&P 500 closed down 0.7% at 2,818.92. The DJIA closed down 0.3% at 25,441.94. Separately, the Nasdaq was down 1.5% at 7,737.42.
Friday was a down day for the broad U.S. markets, although all of the major averages started out the day on a positive note. Crude oil took a big step backward in the session. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly negative. The most positive sectors were financials and consumer staples up 0.3% and 0.1%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were technology and real estate down 1.7% and 0.8%, respectively.
Crude oil was last seen trading down 1.2% at $68.81.
Gold was last seen trading down 0.3% at $1,222.50.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage loss in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) which fell nearly 9% to $47.61. The stock’s 52-week range is $33.23 to $57.60. Volume was just about 67 million compared to the daily average volume of 28 million.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was National Oilwell Varco, Inc. (NYSE: NOV) which traded up about 10% at $46.81. The stock’s 52-week range is $29.90 to $46.91. Volume was 8 million compared to the daily average volume of 2.7 million.
