Tuesday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

August 14, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 0.6% at 2,840.01. The DJIA closed up 0.5% at 25,300.09. Separately, the Nasdaq was up 0.7% at 7,870.89.

Tuesday was a positive day for the broad U.S. markets, with all three major indexes positing a solid gain on the day. Crude oil was briefly positive during the session but ultimately ended flat. The S&P 500 sectors were all positive. The most positive sectors were consumer discretionary, financials and materials up 1.0%, 1.0%, and 0.8%, respectively. The worst performing sector was utilities up only 0.2%.

Crude oil was last seen trading flat at $67.17.

Gold was last seen trading up 0.2% at $1,201.80.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage loss in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was Microchip Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MCHP) which fell about 3.6% to $83.92. The stock’s 52-week range is $78.33 to $104.20. Volume was about 4 million compared to the daily average volume of 2.3 million.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was Advance Auto Parts, Inc. (NYSE: AAP) which traded up about 7% at $154.80. The stock’s 52-week range is $78.81 to $159.50. Volume was about 3.6 million compared to the daily average volume of 1 million.
