Thursday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

August 16, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 0.8% at 2,840.75. The DJIA closed up 1.6% at 25,558.87. Separately, the Nasdaq was up 0.4% at 7,806.52.

Thursday was a very positive day for the broad U.S. markets, with all three major indexes positing a solid gain on the day. Crude oil made a small recovery from a disastrous Wednesday. The S&P 500 sectors were all positive. The most positive sectors were consumer staples, financials and industrials up 1.4%, 1.3%, and 1.2%, respectively. The “worst” performing sector was technology up only 0.4%.

Crude oil was last seen trading up 0.7% at $65.46.

Gold was last seen trading down 0.4% at $1,180.70.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage loss in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (NYSE: CMG) which fell about 4% to $502.07. The stock’s 52-week range is $247.52 to $530.68. Volume was about 2 million compared to the daily average volume of less than 1 million.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was Walmart Inc. (NYSE: WMT) which traded up about 9% at $98.84. The stock’s 52-week range is $77.50 to $109.98. Volume was about 41 million compared to the daily average volume of 7.7 million.
