August 21, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 0.2% at 2,862.85. The DJIA closed up 0.3% at 25,821.88. Separately, the Nasdaq was up 0.5% at 7,859.17.
Tuesday was a positive day for the broad U.S. markets, with the S&P 500 hitting a new all-time high in the session. Crude oil again took a small step forward in the session. The S&P 500 sectors were almost all positive. The most positive sectors were consumer discretionary and industrials up 0.8% each. The worst performing sectors were real estate and utilities down 0.9% and 0.8%, respectively.
Crude oil was last seen trading up 1.3% at $67.32.
Gold was last seen trading up 0.5% at $1,200.00.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage loss in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was The J.M. Smucker Co. (NYSE: SJM) which fell about 7% to $108.12. The stock’s 52-week range is $96.13 to $133.38. Volume was about 4 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.4 million.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was Medtronic PLC (NYSE: MDT) which traded up about 6% at $95.29. The stock’s 52-week range is $76.41 to $95.79. Volume was nearly 14 million compared to the daily average volume of 4.5 million.
