Thursday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

August 23, 2018: The S&P 500 closed down 0.2% at 2,857.04. The DJIA closed down 0.3% at 25,657.39. Separately, the Nasdaq was flat at 7,878.46.

Thursday was a down day for the broad U.S. markets. After these averages had seen some solid gains earlier this week (S&P 500 hitting an all-time high), it was time for the markets to pull back a little. Crude oil mainly traded sideways in the session. The S&P 500 sectors were almost entirely negative. The most positive sector was technology up 0.1%. The worst performing sectors were materials and energy down 0.7% and 0.5%, respectively.

Crude oil was last seen trading flat at $67.85.

Gold was last seen trading down 1.0% at $1,191.50.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage loss in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was L Brands, Inc. (NYSE: LB) which fell about 11% to $28.28. The stock’s 52-week range is $27.95 to $63.10. Volume was about 34.5 million compared to the daily average volume of 4.6 million.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was Synopsys, Inc. (NASDAQ: SNPS) which traded up over 6% at $100.70. The stock’s 52-week range is $77.91 to $101.76. Volume was about 4 million compared to the daily average volume of nearly 1 million.
