Wednesday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

September 26, 2018: The S&P 500 closed down 0.3% at 2,906.25. The DJIA closed down 0.4% at 26,389.42. Separately, the Nasdaq closed flat at 7,990.37.

Wednesday was a down day for the broad U.S. markets. All three major indices had a positive start to the day but lost most of their gains the last hour of trading. Crude oil backed off in the session. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly negative. The most positive sectors were health care and consumer discretionary up 0.1% and 0.3%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were financials and real estate down 1.3% and 1.1%, respectively.

Crude oil was last seen trading down 0.9% at $71.63.

Gold was last seen trading down 0.5% at $1,199.50.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was Southwestern Energy Co. (NYSE: SWN) which fell about 10% to $5.17. The stock’s 52-week range is $3.42 to $6.72. Volume was about 40.5 million compared to the daily average volume of 17.4 million.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALXN) which traded up about 5% at $135.42. The stock’s 52-week range is $102.10 to $144.91. Volume was about 3.5 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.3 million.
