Monday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

October 1, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 0.4% at 2,924.81. The DJIA closed up 0.8% at 26,662.37. Separately, the Nasdaq closed flat at 8,037.30.

Monday was a mixed day for the broad U.S. markets. While all three major indices started out on a positive note, only two of the three finished there. Crude oil started out the week with a bang hitting over $75. The S&P 500 sectors were more or less split down the middle. The most positive sectors were energy and materials up 1.5% and 1.0%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were real estate and utilities down 0.7% and 0.4%, respectively.

Crude oil was last seen trading up 3.1% at $75.54.

Gold was last seen trading down 0.2% at $1,193.40.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Nektar Therapeutics (NASDAQ: NKTR) which fell about 7% to $56.57. The stock’s 52-week range is $22.72 to $111.36. Volume was about 5 million compared to the daily average volume of 2 million.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) which traded up about 7% at $12.07. The stock’s 52-week range is $11.21 to $24.89. Volume was 307 million compared to the daily average volume of 57.8 million.
