Thursday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

December 27, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 0.8% at 2,488.19. The DJIA closed up 1.1% at 23,134.64. Separately, the Nasdaq closed up 0.4% at 6,579.49.

Thursday was a positive day for the broad U.S. markets. Each of the major exchanges started out the day on a negative note, but as the session went on markets moved higher. Crude oil posted another loss on the day holding near $45. The S&P 500 sectors were entirely positive. The most positive sectors were materials and industrials up 1.8% and 1.2%, respectively. The “worst” performing sector was real estate up only 0.3%.

Crude oil was last seen down 1.4% at $45.56.

Gold was last seen trading up 0.3% at $1,276.60.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close was Discovery, Inc. (NASDAQ: DISCA) which traded down about 3% at $24.78. The stock’s 52-week range is $20.60 to $34.89. Volume was roughly 3.5 million compared to the daily average volume of 4.5 million.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was The Cooper Companies, Inc. (NYSE: COO) which rose by 3% to $252.06. The stock’s 52-week range is $216.47 to $283.18. Volume was nearly 1 million compared to the daily average volume of 347,000.
