January 2, 2019: The S&P 500 closed flat at 2,509.97. The DJIA closed flat at 23,344.59. Separately, the Nasdaq closed up 0.5% at 6,665.94.
Wednesday was a flat day for the broad U.S. markets. Each of the major exchanges started out the day on a negative note, but as the session went on markets moved higher. Crude oil made a solid gain only late in the session. The S&P 500 sectors were more or less split down the middle. The most positive sectors were energy and consumer discretionary up 1.3% and 0.6%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were real estate and utilities down 2.6% and 2.0%, respectively.
Crude oil was last seen up 2.5% at $46.53.
Gold was last seen trading up 0.2% at $1,283.20.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close was Hologic, Inc. (NASDAQ: HOLX) which traded down over 6% at $38.40. The stock’s 52-week range is $35.10 to $45.09. Volume was roughly 4 million compared to the daily average volume of 2.4 million.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was The Southwestern Energy Co. (NYSE: SWN) which rose by 9% to $3.72. The stock’s 52-week range is $3.23 to $6.23. Volume was 26.5 million compared to the daily average volume of 20.9 million.
