January 14, 2019: The S&P 500 closed down 0.5% at 2,582.37. The DJIA closed down 0.4% at 23,908.48. Separately, the Nasdaq closed down 0.9% at 6,905.92.
Monday was a down day for the broad U.S. markets. Crude oil took a sizeable step back in the session. The S&P 500 sectors were almost entirely negative. The most positive sectors were financials and industrials up 0.6% and 0.1%. The worst performing sectors were utilities and health care which were down 2.3% and 1.0%, respectively.
Crude oil was last seen down 1.8% at $50.67.
Gold was last seen trading flat at $1,291.60.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close was PG&E Corp. (NYSE: PCG) which traded down about 52% at $8.17. The stock’s 52-week range is $7.78 to $49.42. Volume was roughly 127 million compared to the daily average volume of 13.5 million.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) which rose by 4% to $59.06. The stock’s 52-week range is $48.42 to $80.70. Volume was 32.6 million compared to the daily average volume of 21.2 million.
