Tuesday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

January 15, 2019: The S&P 500 closed up 1.1% at 2,610.30. The DJIA closed up 0.7% at 24,064.98. Separately, the Nasdaq closed up 1.7% at 7,023.83.

Tuesday was a positive day for the broad U.S. markets. Initially the futures for the S&P 500 and DJIA were negative on Tuesday morning, but this quickly turned around as soon as markets opened and they never looked back. Crude oil took a big step forward in the session. The S&P 500 sectors were almost entirely positive. The most positive sectors were health care and technology up 1.8% and 1.5%. The worst performing sectors were materials and industrials which were down 0.6% and 0.3%, respectively.

Crude oil was last seen up 3.1% at $52.06.

Gold was last seen trading flat at $1,289.30.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close was PG&E Corp. (NYSE: PCG) which traded down over 17% at $6.93. The stock’s 52-week range is $5.07 to $49.42. Volume was roughly 150 million compared to the daily average volume of 15.3 million.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was Edwards Lifesciences Corp. (NYSE: EW) which rose by about 9% to $162.65. The stock’s 52-week range is $119.93 to $175.00. Volume was 2.4 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.5 million.
