Thursday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

January 24, 2019: The S&P 500 closed flat at 2,642.24. The DJIA closed flat at 24,552.97. Separately, the Nasdaq closed up 0.7% at 7,073.46.

Thursday was a mixed day for the broad U.S. markets. While some companies have already reported earnings, the showing this week has not proven to be especially strong. Crude oil made a decent gain in the session. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly positive. The most positive sectors were technology and energy up 0.8% and 0.5%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were consumer staples and health care, down 1.4%, and 0.9%, respectively.

Crude oil was last seen up 1.2% at $53.24.

Gold was last seen trading down % at $1,279.60.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close was Freeport-McMoran Inc. (NYSE: FCX) which traded down about 13% at $10.69. The stock’s 52-week range is $9.60 to $20.25. Volume was roughly 64 million compared to the daily average volume of 20.7 million.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was PG&E Corp. (NYSE: PCG) which rose by about 76% to $14.08. The stock’s 52-week range is $5.07 to $49.42. Volume was 73.6 million compared to the daily average volume of 24.5 million.
