
January 31, 2019: The S&P 500 closed up 0.9% at 2,704.70. The DJIA closed flat at 25,009.47. Separately, the Nasdaq closed up 1.4% at 7,281.74.
Thursday was a positive day for the broad U.S. markets. We are near the end of the busiest week of this earnings season with 12 Dow components reporting. After solid results from a few companies reporting on Tuesday and Wednesday, the broad markets seem to be back on track. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly positive. The most positive sectors were utilities and consumer staples up 2.0% and 1.8%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were materials and financials, down 1.7% and 0.4%, respectively.
Crude oil was last seen down 0.5% at $53.97.
Gold was last seen trading up 0.8% at $1,325.40.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close was DowDuPont Inc. (NYSE: DWDP) which traded down about 9% at $53.81. The stock’s 52-week range is $48.89 to $76.00. Volume was roughly 32.8 million compared to the daily average volume of 11.8 million.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was Charter Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: CHTR) which rose by 14% to $330.94. The stock’s 52-week range is $250.10 to $396.64. Volume was 4.7 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.3 million.
