Tuesday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

March 19, 2019: The S&P 500 closed flat at 2,833.04. The DJIA closed flat at 25,896.20. Separately, the Nasdaq closed flat at 7,723.95.

Tuesday was a relatively flat day for the broad U.S. markets. The S&P 500 and DJIA turned negative towards the end of the day, but managed to bounce back to flat. This comes ahead of the FOMC announcement that will come out Wednesday afternoon. Some are speculating that interest rates may be headed lower in this meeting after a year of hikes. Crude oil posted a slight loss in the session. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly negative. The most positive sectors were health care and consumer discretionary up 0.6% and 0.3%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were utilities and financial down 1.4% and 0.9%, respectively.

Crude oil was last seen down 0.3% at $58.90.

Gold was last seen trading up 0.4% at $1,307.00.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close was Monster Beverage Corp. (NASDAQ: MNST) which traded down about 4% at $57.92. The stock’s 52-week range is $47.61 to $66.38. Volume was about 5.8 million compared to the daily average volume of 3.5 million.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ: NVDA) which rose by about 4% to $175.71. The stock’s 52-week range is $124.46 to $292.76. Volume was 20.6 million compared to the daily average volume of 16.6 million.
