Thursday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

March 21, 2019: The S&P 500 closed up 1.1% at 2,854.99. The DJIA closed up 0.9% at 25,963.77. Separately, the Nasdaq closed up 1.4% at 7,838.96.

Thursday was a very positive day for the broad U.S. markets. The S&P 500 and DJIA pushed higher in the session largely driven by the tech sector, while major banks offered some resistance. Crude oil backed off in the session. The S&P 500 sectors were almost entirely positive. The most positive sectors were technology, real estate, and consumer discretionary up 2.6%, 1.7%, and 1.4%, respectively. The worst performing sector was financials down 0.3%.

Crude oil was last seen down 0.6% at $59.85.

Gold was last seen trading up 0.5% at $1,307.90.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close was Biogen Inc. (NASDAQ: BIIB) which traded down about 29% at $226.88. The stock’s 52-week range is $224.60 to $388.67. Volume was about 21 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.3 million.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was Conagra Brands, Inc. (NYSE: CAG) which rose by about 13% to $25.82. The stock’s 52-week range is $20.22 to $39.43. Volume was 27.7 million compared to the daily average volume of 8.7 million.
