Friday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

March 22, 2019: The S&P 500 closed down 1.9% at 2,800.80. The DJIA closed down 1.8% at 25,503.27. Separately, the Nasdaq closed down 2.5% at 7,642.67.

Friday was a very negative day for the broad U.S. markets. The S&P 500 and DJIA gave back all of Thursday’s gains and then some. Although there were a couple positive days this week, Friday seemed to be the nail in the coffin for an all-around loss. Crude oil again backed off in the session. The S&P 500 sectors were almost entirely negative. The most positive sectors were utilities and consumer staples up 0.8%, and 0.1%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were materials and financials down 3.0% and 2.7%, respectively.

Crude oil was last seen down 1.8% at $58.92.

Gold was last seen trading up 0.4% at $1,313.00.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close was SVB Financial Group (NASDAQ: SIVB) which traded down about 7% at $212.16. The stock’s 52-week range is $177.70 to $333.74. Volume was about 1.1 million compared to the daily average volume of about half a million.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was Tiffany & Co. (NYSE: TIF) which rose by about 3% to $103.20. The stock’s 52-week range is $73.04 to $141.64. Volume was 6.2 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.7 million.
