April 15, 2019: The S&P 500 closed flat at 2,905.52. The Dow closed flat at 26,382.03. Separately, the Nasdaq closed flat at 7,976.01.
Monday was a relatively down day for the broad U.S. markets. The S&P 500, Dow, and Nasdaq started off the week with a marginally negative session. We are now in the midst of earnings season where a majority of companies will report and set a direction for the market. Crude oil backed off in the session. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly negative. The most positive sectors were consumer staples and health care up 0.6% and 0.4%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were real estate and financial each down 0.6%.
Crude oil was last seen down 0.7% at $63.47.
Gold was last seen trading down 0.3% at $1,290.80.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close was Alliance Data Systems Corp. (NYSE: ADS) which traded down over 9% at $163.96. The stock’s 52-week range is $142.58 to $250.27. Volume was about 3 million compared to the daily average volume of 0.6 million.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was Anthem, Inc. (NYSE: ANTM) which rose by about 4% to $263.16. The stock’s 52-week range is $219.96 to $317.99. Volume was 3.1 million compared to the daily average volume of 1.7 million.
