Amazon Adds 50,000 Seasonal Jobs

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) will hire more than 50,000 seasonal workers to staff up its 40 U.S. fulfillment centers for the coming holiday shopping season. Amazon joins the ranks of other large retailers with this announcement.

Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT) has said it will add 80,000 to 90,000 jobs this holiday season, Kohl’s Corp. (NYSE: KSS) will add more than 52,000 seasonal workers, and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) will add about 50,000. Employers are expected to add slightly more than the 660,000 in the 2011 holiday season.

As some of the other firms have noted, Amazon expects “thousands of temporary associates will stay on in full-time positions.” Amazon said it currently employs more than 20,000 people full-time in its U.S. fulfillment centers.

Amazon’s shares are trading about flat at the market open this morning, at $244.18 in a 52-week range of $166.97 to %264.11.
