Amazon to Add 6,000 Low-Paid Workers

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) will add 6,000 new jobs at its U.S. fulfillment centers. It is extremely unlikely that the jobs will pay well. Based on the company’s description, the new workers will pack boxes. Presumably, the fact that Amazon has added to staff at its central shipping hubs is a sign that its core business continue to grow.

The announcement:

Amazon today announced it is hiring for more than 6,000 full-time jobs across its U.S. fulfillment network to meet growing customer demand. Employees will pick, pack and ship customer orders.

“We’re proud to be creating more than 6,000 full-time positions where employees will interact with state-of-the-art technology as part of their day-to-day roles,” said Mike Roth, Amazon’s vice president of North America operations. “Amazon not only offers great pay and benefits, we also encourage our employees to continue to grow in their careers.”

Amazon offers hourly employees innovative programs like Career Choice, where the company will pre-pay up to 95 percent of tuition for courses related to in-demand fields, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon. As part of its Career Choice program, the company offers classes from local community and technical colleges to associates onsite at select U.S. fulfillment centers.

While Amazon continues to grow at the top line, its profits have faltered. Revenue rose 15% last quarter to $22.8 billion. However:

Net loss was $57 million in the first quarter, or $0.12 per diluted share, compared with net income of $108 million, or $0.23 per diluted share, in first quarter 2014.
