“No Good Deed” opens Friday on 2,175 screens. The thriller stars Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson, and it is being released by Sony Corp.’s (NYSE: SNE) Screen Gems studios. The folks at Box Office Mojo expect the film to gross $19 million on its opening weekend.
Opening on 3,656 screens is “Dolphin Tale 2” from Time Warner Inc.’s (NYSE: TWX) Warner Bros. studios. The sequel to the family hit is touted to bring in $17 million on its opening weekend. The original, released three years ago, opened with $19.2 million and finished its theatrical run with gross receipts of $72.3 million.
A third new movie, with limited distribution, is “The Drop,” which stars Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and the late James Gandolfini in his final performance. Opening on just 809 screens, the film is expected to bring in around $2 million this weekend for Fox Searchlight, a division of Twenty-First Century Fox Inc. (NASDAQ: FOXA). Rapace starred in the Swedish version of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and its two sequels.
The final film we’ll note this week is “Atlas Shrugged Part III: Who Is John Galt?” It opens on 240 screens. The first two films in the trilogy posted total receipts of just $8 million. The Ayn Rand novel is hugely popular, but that popularity has not carried over to the big screen. The trilogy’s finale is expected to generate around $1 million in ticket sales for privately held Atlas Distribution.
