'Furious 7’ Debuts on 800 IMAX, 3,900 Total Screens

IMAX Corp. (NYSE: IMAX) and the Universal Studios division of Comcast Corp. (NASDAQ: CMCSA) launched the latest installment of the Fast and Furious franchise on what the company calls a revolutionary new laser projection system at the TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX in Los Angeles. Wide release for the latest installment of the Fast and Furious franchise is set for Friday on more than 800 IMAX screens worldwide. It is the widest-ever global IMAX release, and the film will run approximately 365 IMAX screens in the United States and 445 internationally.

“Furious 7” also opens in wide release on Friday on more than 3,900 screens.

The laser projection system may be the big news here though. Laser projection is much brighter than the Xenon lamps used in most current projection systems. This boosts the dynamic range of the image — whiter whites and blacker blacks — and could be a “more compelling update than higher resolution,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

One other famous name included in the laser projection systems is Eastman Kodak Co. (NYSE: KODK), from which IMAX “exclusively licensed laser digital intellectual property.” IMAX has already sold 71 of the laser projection systems. The first was installed in Toronto, and the next will be installed at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle.

The first six movies in the Fast and Furious franchise have produced nearly $940 million in U.S. gross receipts since the first film was released in 2001. The highest grossing of the six was “Fast & Furious 6,” released in 2013. That film picked up nearly $240 million in ticket sales. According to Box Office Mojo, adjusted for inflation the six movies in the franchise have grossed nearly $1.1 billion.

Worldwide the six films have grossed about $2.4 billion and international receipts account for about 61% of the total.
