It looks like the Labor Day weekend will have a surprise box office champ. “War Room,” a low-budget faith-based film from Sony Corp.’s (NYSE: SNE) Affirm Films is taking in $9.3 million for the three-day domestic box office, according to Box Office Mojo. Industry analysts predict that “War Room” could bring in $12.3 million by the end of Monday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Ticket sales for “War Room” dropped slightly in its second week, but not as much as “Straight Outta Compton,” from Comcast Corp.’s (NASDAQ: CMCSA) NBC/Universal, which takes the number two spot with $8.7 million. “A Walk in the Woods” from Broad Green Pictures and EuropaCorp’s “The Transporter Refueled” opened this weekend, and the box office estimates are $8.2 million and $7.2 million, respectively. “Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation” from Viacom Inc.’s (NASDAQ: VIAB) Paramount Pictures manages to squeeze in between them for the number four spot, with $7.2 million.
Another surprise is the appearance of Pantelion’s “Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos,” from Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. (NYSE: LGF), a Mexican animated comedy that may come in at number eight on the charts with $3.4 million — from just 395 theaters. This 3D family fare reportedly had the widest release for a Mexican animated film in history.
In addition, Universal reported this weekend that “Jurassic World” crossed the $1 billion threshold at the international box office. That makes it only the fourth film to ever reach the milestone, after 1997’s “Titanic,” 2009’s “Avatar” and this year’s “Furious 7.”
