Top Video Games to Look Forward to in 2016

Thinkstock

Video games have always been the next step in interactive media, whether you want to play a game for a compelling story with thrilling cutscenes or you just want to blow off some steam and cut through hordes of aliens with a chainsaw. Video games have become a large part of our culture, similar to movies in how we look forward to them and even talk about them.

24/7 Wall Street has put together a list of the top games we are looking forward to playing in 2016. Obviously, the top game developers are making their mark on the list, like Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA), Square Enix and Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE).

As more game previews come out, we will update our list to accommodate for the new releases.

“Doom” is being remastered in 2016. This franchise has been around for a long time, allowing players to take a first person perspective in the fight through a hellish nightmare, blasting away monsters with an ever-expanding arsenal. This game will feature some of the classic weapons: the shotgun, chainsaw and even the fan favorite BFG 9000. From what we can tell, Doom looks like an excellent extension on an awesome franchise. It will be available on PC, PlayStation 4 (PS4) and the Xbox One. Expect it in the first half of 2016.

“Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” follows the story of Nathan Drake — think a more masculine version of Tomb Raider. Developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony, this game will be available exclusively on the PS4. If you have played any of the prior Uncharted series, you will know that this game boasts one of the most interactive environments out there, as well as gripping cutscenes. We can look forward to this game in April of 2016.

“Dark Souls 3” is the fourth entry of the Souls series. Its predecessors are known as some of the most difficult games to complete, requiring an incredible amount of skill and luck to boot. This is an action role-playing game (RPG) set in the third person, where players use medieval weapons and magic to strategically cut through enemies. This game will be available in April of 2016 on the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

“Street Fighter 5” is the next generation of the Street Fighter franchise, which has been around since the 1980s. In its own unique style of fighting, Street Fighter spawned hundreds of other fighting games that have their own take on its style. What sets “Street Fighter 5” above the previous games in the series is the number of playable characters, graphics and “Supers” available to the player. Capcom developed and published this game exclusively for the PS4 and PC platforms. We can expect to see this game hit the street in February 2016.

“Mass Effect Andromeda” is an upcoming third-person RPG shooter set to follow “long after” the events of “Mass Effect 3.” This is a very popular franchise for EA. It has perhaps the most open world imaginable, and it’s not just one world there is interplanetary travel allowing the player to literally explore the galaxy. Like the prequels, this game will offer the potential to change events in the game based on player decisions, even so much as the ending — although we hope the ending will be better than “Mass Effect 3.” We can expect this game to come out on PC, Xbox One and PS4 platforms around the holiday season in 2016.

“Kingdom Hearts 3” (KH3) will be the most recent installment in perhaps one of the most confusing storylines a game has ever had. We’ll be looking for some clarification in this one. However, the gameplay from KH and KH2 was worlds ahead of its time, and it’s safe to say we can expect top marks in this area for KH3. Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) has a huge stake in this franchise, as most of its classical characters have made appearances in the game. Square Enix developed this game exclusively for console platforms (PS4 and Xbox One).

Reportedly, Square Enix developers from the KH3 battle system have been consulted in the very much anticipated “Final Fantasy 7” remaster. So fans of the Kingdom Hearts series might find themselves open to the Final Fantasy series and vice versa. Either way, it is safe to say that “Final Fantasy 7” is the most anticipated release. However, there is no date set for it as of yet.
