'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Big Box Office Debut Boosts Appeal of Franchise

“Spider-Man: Homecoming,’’ the sixth film in the blockbuster franchise, finished first in the weekend box office with a $117 million gross, cementing its place among the biggest movie franchises of all time.

The latest movie in the franchise had the third-largest opening weekend of the year so far, according to Box Office Mojo, and played in 4,348 friendly neighborhood theaters. The opening currently stands as the second-largest ever for a Spider-Man flick.

The Spider-Man franchise is the ninth-biggest of all time, raking in $1.695.7 billion for six films. The average domestic box office take for a Spider-Man movie is $282.6 million. The first Spider-Man movie in 2002, starring Tobey Maguire and directed by Sam Raimi, did $403.7 million in domestic business.

“Spider-man: Homecoming’’ is focusing its sights on overtaking the Middle Earth movie franchise, which has grossed $1.846.7 billion thus far.

“Spider-man: Homecoming,’’ released by Sony Pictures and starring Tom Holland, is riding the momentum of critical acclaim and strong viewer approval, as evidenced by ratings from Rotten Tomatoes. The movie website gave the film a 93% fresh rating and an audience score of 92%.

The movie is also benefiting from star power from action hero veterans Robert Downey Jr. and Michael Keaton. Downey has portrayed Marvel Comics superhero Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, either as the lead role or an ensemble member. Downey also has appeared in the title role of the Sherlock Holmes movies. Keaton played the title role of Batman in two films directed by Tim Burton.

Also appearing in “Spider-Man: Homecoming’’ is the actress Zendaya, who starred in the Disney Channel situation comedy “Shake It Up’’ from 2010 to 2013.

Internationally, the latest Spider-Man movie pulled in an estimated $140 million from 56 total markets, according to Box Office Mojo.
