June 6 marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day, one of the most famous events of World War II. Nazi Germany had taken France and the Allies gathered together 2,876,000 soldiers to reclaim it. That day, the coast of Normandy was bombarded with 160,000 Allied troops, supported by 13,000 aircraft and 5,000 ships. The United States Army was essential to the success of the battle, with over 20,000 soldiers landing on the beaches of Normandy. Thousands of soldiers died in the subsequent battle, but in the end, the Allies successfully liberated Paris and changed the course of the war.
Today, there are over 450,000 active-duty troops in the U.S. Army (as of September 2023), making it one of the most powerful military forces in the world. While the number of active-duty and reserve personnel varies by region, the Army maintains a presence in all 50 states, with most housing at least one active military base. (These are the states with the largest Army presence.)
To identify which state is home to the most Army personnel, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed records from the Department of Defense Personnel, Workforce Reports & Publications. We analyzed the most recently updated unclassified military personnel data (from Sept. 30, 2022), considering the number of active-duty Army personnel serving in each state and Washington D.C. adjusted per 100,000 residents per state. (These are the states with the most veterans all 50 states ranked.)
