China’s military is massive to say the least. This force is not only the largest in Asia, but the world at large. At the heart of this is the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) which is central to China’s ambitions as a global superpower spreading its influence far and wide. (China Isn’t the Strongest Military in Asia.)
China’s immense manpower is the key to its military posture. The PLA’s ground forces are just one part of a multi-branch force that also includes an increasingly expanding navy and air force. While China’s standing army dwarfs its neighbors, it’s not just the numbers that set it apart.
While these forces are truly massive, the Chinese government has also invested heavily in modernizing the PLA, especially in terms of its navy and air force. Currently, the PLA is adding new cutting-edge technology to its arsenal, with everything from stealth fighters to hypersonic missiles to aircraft carriers.
India is China’s closest competitor in terms of manpower, and it maintains an active-duty force of around 1.5 million troops. Russia also manages a sizable active-duty force of around 1.3 million personnel. These three nations are the main military powers of Asia, and much of this power is derived from their sizable forces and technologically advanced assets. (This NATO country has a standing army of 1.3 million.)
Here, 24/7 Wall St. is taking a closer look at Asian militaries at large and which ones have the most manpower. To identify the Asian countries with the most active military personnel, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed 2024 Military Strength Ranking from Global Firepower, an annually updated defense-related statistics website with information on 145 countries. Countries were ranked on the total number of active military personnel. We included supplemental information regarding total personnel, reserves, total population, fit-for-service, and overall military strength score.
Here is a look at the largest standing armies in Asia:
Why Are We Covering This?
Understanding the military dynamics of Asia is important considering the region’s complex geopolitical landscape and its growing strategic significance. Historically, Asia has been shaped by internal conflicts, border disputes, and great power competition. Today, its military forces play an important role in determining regional stability. As tensions rise over territorial claims and political influence, military power is the law of the land, from disputes in the South China Sea to the contested borders in South Asia.
