In December 1941, Japanese military forces had devastated forces around the globe. They had attacked the U.S. at Pearl Harbor, conquered various areas, and even took over Hong Kong. By May 1942, the Allied forces were fed up with Japan’s antics and widespread violence. The Battle of the Coral Sea — sometimes referred to as just the Battle of Coral Sea — saw Japanese and U.S. naval forces clashing in the Coral Sea in a revolutionary battle. Rather than the ships firing at each other directly, naval carriers USS Lexington and USS Yorktown launched waves of aerial attacks against the Japanese forces threatening Australia. The Japanese fleet, led by Shōkaku and Zuikaku, faced a harrowing four-day battle with U.S. forces. Both sides suffered heavy losses. Technically, Japan won the battle. But the damage to their ships prevented Japan from seizing Port Moresby or from using Shōkaku and Zuikaku in the later Battle of Midway, providing a huge tactical advantage to the U.S. and Allied forces. (Was this WWII’s greatest battle?)
However, many other ships and naval vessels also took part in the Battle of the Coral Sea. Here, 24/7 Wall St. explored what happened during the battle and which ships played a significant role in thefight. To do so, we reviewed various military and historical sources, including the Naval History and Heritage Command, National World War II Museum, and Encyclopedia Britannica. The ships are ordered chronologically from the date of commission. While we excluded smaller ships like destroyers and auxiliaries, we included supplemental information regarding the type, armament, speed, displacement, and aircraft for each vessel.
Why Are We Covering This?

The Battle of Coral Sea was one of the largest and most significant battles in the Pacific during World War II, especially in terms of its impact and strategic outcome. It would ultimately shape the outcome of the conflict. Understanding which ships were used, and how these ships played a part in battle, gives insight into how the U.S. deployed its military resources at the time — and what we could potentially learn about our ships today.
