It’s that time of year: the International Tank Challenge, when teams come together to strengthen military partnerships and develop stronger tactical skills. This year, teams from United States, Denmark, Italy, Slovenia, and Switzerland will take on challenges over a period of one week designed to test their ability “to operate, navigate, and fire tanks under pressure.” All nations involved, outside of Switzerland, are part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), an intergovernmental transnational military alliance dedicated to a principle of collective support and defense. Switzerland has been a partner to NATO members, but its enshrined neutrality means it cannot participate further. Still, considering rising global tensions, learning more about tank deployment in pressure situations is crucial. This is especially true as Donald Trump has recently began sharing his desire to acquire both Canada and Greenland; the latter is a kingdom of Denmark, another NATO ally. Should Trump attempt to move to overtake Denmark, other NATO allies would undoubtedly have to step in — and NATO’s military holdings in Europe are relatively strong. (What would the world look like today without NATO?)
When it comes to European NATO members, countries like France have substantial weaponry, including its own nuclear arsenal, advanced fighter jets such as the Rafale, and naval assets. French military doctrine emphasizes rapid deployment and global intervention capabilities, which is reflected in its permanent bases in Africa and the Middle East. Other countries, like Serbia, have dozens upon dozens of Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) and other armored vehicles that ensure safety with troop movement while providing offensive firepower. Collectively, these assets enable NATO forces to maintain a tactical advantage, regardless of the terrain. These also enable rapid deployment, which ultimately acts as a deterrent for opposing forces. Here, 24/7 Wall St. is looking at the European nations with the largest forces of military vehicles. To identify the European countries with the most military vehicles, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed 2024 Military Strength Ranking from Global Firepower, an annually updated defense-related statistics website with information on 145 countries. Countries were ranked on the total number of vehicles in their arsenal. We included supplemental information regarding the total tanks, artillery and MLRS units, as well as each country’s overall military strength score. Russia was excluded from this list.
Why Are We Covering This?

Understanding the military dynamics in Europe is important considering the continent’s deeply rooted geopolitical challenges going forward. Historically, Europe has been marked by wars, shifting alliances, and territorial disputes. Yet it still remains a key player on the global stage. At the same time, alliances like the EU or NATO are some of the most powerful in terms of their influence on the world. Whether it is a question of NATO’s expansion or Russia’s campaign in Eastern Europe, these military forces tilt the region’s balance of power. With Donald Trump’s presidency threatening certain NATO relationships, and increasing tensions in Europe, we may see NATO needing to step in sooner rather than later.
Can you guess which European countries have the most military vehicles?
