A little under 4 million Muslims live in the United States now. Some were immigrants from countries all over the world while others are from families that have been Americans for many generations. Many people have converted to Islam from other religions as well. Their numbers are reflected in education, business, and government. We even have four Muslims serving in the U.S. Congress today—a testament to the genuine religious freedom in our country. You can check out where your state’s Muslim population stands in this article.
24/7 Wall St. Insights
Muslims live predominantly in urban areas, particularly in the states with the largest populations.
Data on the numbers of Muslims in the U.S. are often inaccurate, but can show broad trends.
The most authoritative recent data on the American Muslim population comes from 2020 U.S. census questions on religion. These data are incomplete and often inaccurate, however. The Muslim community is growing rapidly, so these data are already a bit inaccurate four years on. Some Muslims avoid answering these kinds of census questions, fearing potential persecution. With recent immigrants and elderly people, there can also be language issues that interfere with accurate data-gathering. A clear example of inaccuracy in census estimates of Muslims is that Hawaii is ranked last, with only 145 Muslims. But in fact, most sources say that the Muslim population there is in the thousands.
Despite these inaccuracies, in a very broad sense, the census estimates show us which states have by far the largest Muslim populations and those where the numbers are relatively small. This information can be useful to anyone who works in a field where serving diverse populations is expected, such as government, nonprofit services, education, and retail marketing.
