Will Wal-Mart Sell Google Nexus One? It Won't Matter

Blogs and tech websites are beginning to buzz with news that Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) may begin to sell the Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Nexus One handset powered by the search company’s own Android operating systems.

There is no reason anyone should care. Wal-Mart already sells the Apple the Blackberry, the Palm (NASDAQ:PALM) Pre, and handsets from HTC and Motorola (NYSE:MOT) that run Android. Wal-Mart also carries phones from the world’s largest handset companies–Nokia (NOK), LG, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson.

Wal-Mart sells carrier subscriptions for Sprint (NYSE:S) Verizon Wireless, and AT&T (NYSE:T). It is, in other words, a one stop shop for almost every major phone and carrier except Apple.

Android have enough publicity and sufficient retail and online sales outlets to be a success. The only things that stand in its path are the good, old-fashioned hurdles of product quality and customer service. Initial reaction to the Nexus One is that the customer service is poor. Wal-Mart can’t help with that.
