As it has done for several years now, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) assembled a panel of experts — ages 18 months to 12 years old — to select the toys that will be most in demand this holiday season. The most popular toys fall into a few categories: toys that kids can interact with and collect, toys that keep kids moving and (no surprise here) toys inspired by favorite movies and TV shows.
Last year’s Hatchimals are back and just as popular as they were a year ago. Walmart promises to provide details on October 6 for toys the company identifies now as “Hatchimals Surprise.” Of the top 25 toys, five are exclusive to Walmart.
One of those exclusive toys is a sleigh from the Disney movie “Frozen” that is large enough for two children and moves at a maximum speed of five miles per hour. The sleigh costs $298 and is available with free three to five day shipping or free pickup at store locations.
To help parents pay for their kids’ toys, Walmart has also revived its holiday layaway program with the same terms it used last year: a 10% or $10 (whichever is greater) down payment, a minimum purchase of $10 per item totaling at least $50 per order, and a $10 cancellation fee in most states. Layaways must be paid off by December 11.
Among the collectible toys are Fingerlings ($29.95), littleBits Star Wars Droid Inventor Kit ($99) and Num Noms Nail Polish Maker ($44.88).
In the group of toys that move are the Walmart-exclusive Monster Jam Grave Digger ($398), the Huffy Electric Green Machine Trike ($199) and the Nerf Rival Nemesis MXVII-10K in red or blue ($88).
Top movie and TV character toys are the Imaginext DC Super Friends Batman Batbot Xtreme ($94), the Disney Junior Doc McStuffins Baby All in One Nursery ($79.97) and the Paw Patrol My Size Lookout Tower ($99.88).
