Whitman Among Candidates Emerging to Succeed Kalanick at Uber

As Uber looks to put the controversy around its former CEO Travis Kalanick in the rearview mirror, the ride-sharing company has been searching for a new chief executive. Among the possible successors reportedly is Hewlett Packard Enterprise CEO Meg Whitman. Bloomberg News reports that she has been with the beleaguered company recently.

Apparently Uber has made a short list of candidates and, according to Fortune, hopes to have someone in place to run the San Francisco–based company by September.

Kalanick was forced to resign in June following a tide of scandals involving Uber, among them charges of sexual harassment and an embarrassing video that caught Kalanick abusing an Uber driver. There was also a major lawsuit alleging intellectual property theft from Google’s Waymo self-driving car division. And Uber had to fire more than 20 employees following a probe into its work culture.

Kalanick founded Uber in 2009, and his brash demeanor reflected the aggressive business practices of the company.

There has been speculation that Uber might hire a woman to head the company. Among women under consideration are Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, Thrive Global founder Arianna Huffington and former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer.

Recently dismissed executives Mark Fields, Ford’s former chief executive officer, and outgoing General Electric CEO Jeffery Immelt are considered candidates as well.
