The NBA season is now well under way, and some teams are much bigger revenue generators than others. These teams drive up TV ratings when they play, and tickets at their arenas are among the most expensive in the NBA. When they go to other cities, they boost ticket prices there as well.

Secondary market ticket resource TiqIQ provided 24/7 Wall St. with average ticket prices for each of the NBA’s 30 teams for the rest of the 2013-2014 season. The Miami Heat have the most expensive road tickets in the league by far. Fans in other cities wishing to see the team in action will have to shell out an average of $268 when the Heat comes to town. The average NBA ticket for the rest of the year is just $130. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the eight teams with average road game ticket prices of more than $150.

Many of the teams with the most expensive home games are from some of the biggest cities in the country. NBA teams from New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, the three largest cities in the U.S., have among the highest average road prices. TiqIQ’s Jesse Lawrence explained that teams from larger cities tend to have more fans living in other parts of the country. And those fans often want to come and see their teams. There are two teams from the New York area among the eight teams with the highest road prices. This makes sense, explained Lawrence, because “there are New Yorkers everywhere.”

However, being from a large city isn’t everything. Some of these teams are also generating a great deal of excitement from local fans. Many of these teams have either been recently successful, or have a long history of winning. The Lakers and Bulls, which have the second- and third-most total NBA titles, are both in the top five for average road ticket price.

Some teams that draw large audiences are not necessarily storied franchises but are considered serious championship contenders. The Oklahoma City Thunder, which moved from Seattle in 2008, have made the playoffs in each of the last four years. The team even made it to the NBA finals two years ago.

By far, the team that attracts the most attention is the Miami Heat. Lawrence explained that the team has two major factors attracting fans from around the country to its games. The Heat not only features several of the biggest stars in the NBA, including the biggest — LeBron James — but it also won the Championship the last two years.

“There’s always a champion’s premium, where fans say ‘I want to see how we stack up against the best there is,’” explained Lawrence.

24/7 Wall St. reviewed the average road ticket price for each NBA team as of January 2 for the remainder of the 2013-2014 season. All ticket price data were provided by TiqIQ and represent the face value of tickets available on secondary market sites. Additional statistics, including win-loss records, attendance statistics, injuries and player performance, came from ESPN.com, NBA.com and pro-basketball-reference.com.

8. Los Angeles Clippers
> Avg. road ticket price: $154
> Avg. road attendance: 16,674 (7th lowest)
> Win – Loss record: 22 – 12 (6th best)

The Clippers are winning games this season, with a 22-12 record so far, the best in the Pacific Division. The Clippers have the impressive performance of power forward Blake Griffin to thank for much of their success. He’s averaged 22 points per game this season, more than any other player on the team, and he seems to only be gaining momentum. In the last five games through January 1, Griffin has averaged more than 28 points per game. Griffin was one of five Clippers selected for the Western Conference All-Star Ballot this past November. Last season, the Clippers finished first in their division but lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Memphis Grizzlies.

7. Houston Rockets

> Avg. road attendance: 17,643 (8th highest)
> Win – Loss record: 21 – 13 (7th best)

The Rockets started this season by signing star center Dwight Howard. This season, Howard has scored nearly 18 points per game, more than every player on the team except for James Harden. In a recent game against the Pistons, with Harden out, Howard scored 35 points. With big-name players such as Harden and Howard, as well as sensation Jeremy Lin, the Rockets are a big draw, averaging 17,643 fans attending per road game — seventh best in the league. The Rockets’ most expensive game this season will be against the Heat this coming March. Tickets for the game are marked up about 153%, one of the highest premiums this season.

6. Brooklyn Nets
> Avg. road ticket price: $165
> Avg. road attendance: 16,685 (8th lowest)
> Win – Loss record: 11 – 21 (6th worst)

Arguably no team generated more excitement in the offseason than the Brooklyn Nets. The former New Jersey Nets celebrated their first year in Brooklyn by finishing as the number four seed in the Eastern Conference last season. While the Nets lost in the first round, there were certainly hopes the team could continue their success this year. Those hopes skyrocketed after the team made a blockbuster trade, exchanging five players and three first-round draft picks for four players, including star veterans Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. The team also hired former Nets star Jason Kidd as head coach. However, by many accounts, this year has been a disaster. The team has won just 11 of its first 32 games, and it is ranked 10th in the Eastern Conference.

5. Chicago Bulls
> Avg. road ticket price: $172
> Avg. road attendance: 18,084 (2nd highest)
> Win – Loss record: 13 – 18 (12th worst)

The Bulls will face the Charlotte Bobcats in North Carolina later this month. Tickets for the game will be $173 more than they are normally, a 123% premium. The Bulls haven’t won the NBA championship since 1998, and they have struggled for years after Michael Jordan — who now owns the Bobcats — retired (for the first time) that year. The team, however, has still managed to often make the playoffs. Last season, despite being without star Derrick Rose, the Bulls qualified for the playoffs for the eighth time in nine seasons. This year, with Rose injured again, the Bulls have a losing record, but their fan base is still very strong. Attendance at Bulls games — home and away — is among the best in the league, at 98.6% of capacity, second only to the Heat.

4. Oklahoma City Thunder
> Avg. road ticket price: $177
> Avg. road attendance: 17,463 (10th highest)
> Win – Loss record: 25 – 7 (3rd best)

The Oklahoma City Thunder feature two of the league’s best players: Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. Durant has finished second in MVP voting in three of the last four seasons, and between them, he and Westbrook have been named All-Stars seven times. The team remains a huge draw even with Westbrook expected to still be sidelined through next month’s All-Star Game. The average road price for tickets to watch the Thunder is more than $175, more than all but three other teams. The team is hardly just star power either. Oklahoma City currently holds the third-best win-loss record in the NBA, behind only the Indiana Pacers and the Portland Trail Blazers.

3. New York Knicks
> Avg. road ticket price: $178
> Avg. road attendance: 17,233 (14th lowest)
> Win – Loss record: 10 – 21 (4th worst)

The Knicks are one of the most prominent teams in the NBA and rarely ever struggle to sell home tickets. At home, they get an assist from playing in the newly-renovated Madison Square Garden, frequently termed “The World’s Most Famous Arena.” But the on-court product is lacking — the Knicks currently have one of the worst records in the NBA, and reports have circulated that head coach Mike Woodson’s job is in jeopardy. Some have speculated that star Carmelo Anthony may leave as a free agent after this season. Fans may be losing interest as well. Although road tickets to see the Knicks are the third-most expensive in the NBA, they fill just 88% of seats when visiting other teams — among the bottom half of the league. Despite this, tickets to see the Knicks play the Heat in February averaging $510 according to TiqIQ, the most of any single game.

2. Los Angeles Lakers

> Avg. road attendance: 17,804 (4th highest)
> Win – Loss record: 13 – 19 (9th worst)

The Lakers may not have the best record in the NBA, with just 13 wins to 19 losses while long-time star Kobe Bryant recovers from injury, but they remain the legendary Lakers. The 16-time NBA champions may be the most storied franchise in the NBA and continue to command massive prices, both at home and away, despite speculation they may look to rebuild their team. The Lakers are still one of the biggest draws in the NBA, filling 94% of available seats at road games, third-most in the league, while commanding an average of $181 per seat while travelling, more than any team but the Miami Heat.

1. Miami Heat

> Avg. road attendance: 18,977 (the highest)
> Win – Loss record: 25 – 8 (5th best)

The Heat won the NBA championship in the last two years, and the team is currently first in the Southeast Division with only 8 losses in 32 games. LeBron James, who has already taken Miami to the NBA finals three times, is in his fourth season with the Heat this year. Widely regarded as the best player in the game today, James continues to dominate the Heat’s opponents. The popularity of the Heat has meant that arenas they travel average being filled to 97% of capacity, more than any other team in the league. Miami Heat tickets
