Toys for cats are catnip for the pets industry.

Americans bought about $1 billion in toys for dogs and cats in 2016, an 18% increase from 2011, according to market research firm Packaged Facts. Of all toy sales for pets, 69% were for dogs and 31% for cats.

In breaking down the data on toy purchases by owners of dogs and cats, Packaged Facts found that owners of multiple cats bought the most toys per owner.

Three companies dominate the cat toy industry. Kong holds a 22% market share, followed by PetEdge and Ducky World, which each has 10% of the market. These companies and others are responding to trends in the toys for cats market. Among these trends are increased demand for interactive/training toys, self-entertaining toys, multi-functional plush toys, and natural/eco-friendly products that use organic fabrics and sustainable crops such as hemp and bamboo.

National Pet Owner Surveys show that pleasing the cat is a top consideration in toy product purchasing, along with product quality and product safety.

To determine the 25 best toys for cats, 24/7 Wall St. identified the best-selling cat toys on Amazon on January 4, 2018. The results were then filtered so as to remove all items that received fewer than 4 out 5 star ratings. Also removed were items determined to be too similar to a higher ranking item to merit separate inclusion.
