100 Most Popular Musicians on Tour This Spring

CBCK-Christine / Getty Images

Going on tour is one of the most lucrative means of making money for today’s popular musicians. As of June 2017, the U.S. music industry was worth $17.2 billion, according to PwC, and live music concert sales accounted for 43% of all revenue. While these revenues do not all end up in the pockets of the artists, a significant portion does.

With this in mind, it’s no wonder that many popular musicians endure grueling tour schedules, often taking just enough time between concerts to travel to the next city to entertain the next slew of fans willing to shell out hundreds of dollars.

By creating an index based on various metrics such as followers on Spotify and on concert tracking website Songkick, 24/7 Wall St. has determined the 100 most popular musicians going on tour this spring.

In an age where streaming has overtaken physical record sales, and where streaming pays relatively little — Spotify, for example, pays artists a fraction of a cent per play — musicians depend more and more on performing live to earn a living. Fortunately for the type of musicians able to sell out stadiums, fans today are paying more for concert tickets than ever before.

Many of the most popular musicians take advantage of how in demand they are and play as many shows as possible. Australian singer Vance Joy has 71 shows scheduled through the summer, 38 of which will take place this spring. Singer Elton John isn’t far behind with 70 total shows planned, with 15 falling in the spring season. Bruno Mars and U2 – the second and third most popular artists on tour – have 56 and 60 shows scheduled, respectively.

Other artists take an alternative approach and limit the number of live performances. Maroon 5 – the fifth most popular musical act according to our index – only has six shows scheduled. Lil Wayne only has two.

While the continental United States is both a huge market for live music and is geographically conducive to touring, a number of the artists on our list will also be playing shows outside of the U.S. this spring. Twenty-one of the 100 acts listed are playing their next show outside of the U.S. The most common country to be played during these upcoming dates is Mexico. All will play U.S. dates this spring in addition to the international concerts.

To identify the 100 most popular musicians touring this spring, 24/7 Wall St. created an index based on the weighted average of the number of fans tracking an artist’s tour dates on Songkick as well as the average daily number of visits to the act’s Wikipedia page over the past 12 months (as of April 12, 2018). To be considered for the ranking, an artist or band needed to be currently on tour in the U.S. and have an average of 500,000 fans tracking them on Songkick. For the index calculation, fans tracking was given a weight of 0.70, while Wikipedia page views was given a weight of 0.30.
