Most Popular Hairstyles the Year You Were Born

Women’s hairstyles have changed immensely over the years, undergoing multiple transformations since 1925. The most popular hairstyles have traditionally followed the trends set by major figures in both Hollywood and in politics.

To determine the most popular hairstyles the year you were born, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed hairstyle trends from various sources for each year between 1925 and 2000. We considered research by fashion magazines, vintage hairstyles archived on fashion blogs, corresponded with college of design Fashion Institute of Technology, and consulted experts in the industry.

For information on how hairstyles have evolved over the decades, we turned to Jeff Hafler, the founder and owner of the Beauty Bubble Salon and Museum in Joshua Tree, California. Hafler explained that while Hollywood has had an integral impact on hairstyles over the past 80 years, other factors also helped shape trends. For example, both world wars had a tremendous influence on women’s hairstyles, as they needed to satisfy both functionality and celebratory purposes at different times.

“World War I was when women were bobbing their hair, and then again in World War II women cut their hair short,” said Hafler.

Iconic figures in Hollywood helped popularize specific hairstyles that corresponded with the effects both world wars had on women. “Veronica Lake wore her hair long in the 40s, and the studios asked her to cut it short so women wouldn’t feel bad about cutting their hair short, [such as those] who had to go work in the factories,” says Hafler.

Hairstyles such as the victory rolls, or voluminous curls pinned up around the frame of the face, came about after the United States won World War II.
