If you are planning on buying a new tablet, a 4K smart TV, a new phone, or some other new tech gadget this holiday season, chances are you’re not alone. Two-thirds of American adults plan on buying a tech gift this year, according to projections from the Consumer Technology Association. Luckily, many of the latest consumer tech products don’t have to break the bank. There are a number of popular gadgets available for less than $100 this holiday season.

Many popular tech products have become much more affordable over the past decade. Since 2008, the average price of a phone in the U.S. has fallen by more than 45%, and the price of a television by more than 83%, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some of the most advanced tech products, including new smartphones, portable speakers, and virtual reality headsets, are now available in models running below $100.

To determine the 50 top tech gifts under $100, 24/7 Wall St. ranked a list of more than 350 popular consumer electronics and accessories based on their projected Google search activity for the 2018 holiday spending season with data from Google Ads. Data are based on projections for the period Nov. 15, 2018 to Dec. 25, 2018. Price estimates are based on Amazon listings.

Detailed Findings

One trend apparent in this year’s list of tech gifts under $100 is the rising popularity and concurrent affordability of home automation products. Products that allow users to automate home systems like lighting, heating and cooling, entertainment, appliances, and security have dropped in price in recent years and are among the most searched-for tech gifts.

According to analysis from consulting firm Transparency Market Research, the value of the global home automation market is projected to nearly double over the next decade, from $64.7 billion in 2017 to $116.3 billion in 2026.

There are a number of home surveillance cameras on this year’s list, with products from Canary, Blink Home Security, and Wyze Labs projected to be among the most popular. Smart lighting systems, from companies like Philips, Nexlux, and WeMo, that allow users to sync their lights and brightness with factors such as occupancy and the availability of daylight, also populate the list.

Most home automation systems are anchored to a smart speaker with voice command controls. Two of the leading models — Google Home Mini and Amazon Echo Dot — are projected to be more popular this holiday season than any tech product available for less than $100 other than the Amazon Kindle.
