Most Popular Golden Globe Nominated Actors
Published:
Last Updated:
The Golden Globes stand apart from other awards ceremonies such as the Emmys and the Academy Awards in that they recognize achievements in both television and film. While these two mediums have historically existed on different levels – cinema being considered a higher art form than television – the two forms of storytelling are more similar today than ever before.
There’s no better illustration of this than the list of actors who have received nominations for Golden Globe Awards. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which has held the event since 1943, has this year nominated 68 actors who have helped elevate elevate their craft. In many cases, those nominated for work on television originally found fame working in film and vice versa.
24/7 Wall St. has identified the most popular Golden Globe-nominated actors this year by creating an index measuring the popularity of each actor’s work in film and television, as well the popularity of each actor’s Wikipedia Page over the past two years.

Detailed findings
Among the most popular actors nominated for their performances in television this past year are Jim Carrey and Julia Roberts – two stars who are undoubtedly best known for their motion picture work. While Carrey has worked in television before, most notably as a cast member on the sketch comedy show “In Living Color,” he became an international sensation starring in movies like “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” and “The Truman Show.” He’s now returned to television with his honed acting chops, starring in the Showtime series “Kidding.”
Similarly, Julia Roberts is considered one of the biggest movie stars ever. This past year she devoted her talents to the television series “Homecoming,” for which she is nominated for a Golden Globe.
This road leads both ways. While Adam Driver is currently one of the biggest, relatively young stars in Hollywood – having starred in multiple Star Wars sequels and other popular films such as “Logan Lucky,” his first significant role was arguably that of Adam Sackler in the HBO series “Girls.” Driver used some of that clout to work his way up in the movies. He’s now nominated for a Golden Globe his role in Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman.”
This year’s Golden Globes prove that neither movies nor television are the dominant medium in today’s entertainment landscape. Both produce huge stars who can gain popularity in either field.
Methodology
To determine the most popular Golden Globe-nominated actors, 24/7 Wall St. developed an index based on Wikipedia page views over the last two years and the number of user ratings for films in which they’ve starred. The number of Wikipedia page views for each actor for the two-year period leading up to Dec. 9 of this year. This timeframe best reflects which actors are currently the most popular as opposed to those who may have been extremely popular at one time and have since faded from public view. We took into account the total number of IMDb user reviews for films and television series each actor has starred in. To be considered one of the top film’s stars, actors must be listed among the first four people under a respective film or television series’ star listing.
